Here’s something we see all the time. A business owner sets up a Google Ads campaign, checks it maybe once a month if they remember, and can’t figure out why the phone isn’t ringing more. Sound familiar?
Running ads sounds easy. Pick a few keywords, set a budget, write something catchy, and let it run. But most of the accounts we look at are losing money in ways nobody’s noticed yet. Wrong search terms. Audiences that were never going to buy anything. Tracking that hasn’t worked properly in months.
Setting It Up Once Isn’t the Same as Running It
There’s a big gap between “we have a campaign running” and actually having someone handle adwords services management day to day. It’s not a set-it-and-walk-away kind of thing. You’ve got to check in, cut what’s not working, push more budget toward what is. Most business owners just don’t have three spare hours a week to sit inside an ads dashboard.
We had a client once whose account had been “set up right” a year earlier by a freelancer. Nobody had touched it since. Bids hadn’t moved. The search terms report was full of clicks from people looking for something completely unrelated. Conversion tracking? Broken for who knows how long. Honestly, that’s not rare. That’s what most neglected accounts look like.
What Someone Actually Managing It Should Be Doing
Quality scores, ad copy tests, seasonal bid changes, making sure the page someone lands on actually matches what they typed into Google. Skip that stuff and you’re just handing Google your card number and hoping for the best.
Don’t Forget the Organic Side
While all that’s going on with ads, there’s another piece a lot of small businesses never get around to: organic search. If nobody’s ever taken a proper look at your site’s structure or your content or your backlinks, there’s a good chance you’re leaving easy wins on the table. That’s basically what small business SEO services are for, not stuffing every keyword you can think of, but figuring out what your real customers are actually searching and making sure you show up when they do.

Why You Shouldn’t Pick Just One
Paid and organic aren’t really rivals. They work better side by side. Ads get you seen right now. SEO keeps working long after you’ve paused the campaign or run out of budget for the month. Businesses that treat these as two totally separate things usually end up paying more for less.
So if your ads account has been running on autopilot, or your site hasn’t cracked page one in years, it’s probably worth getting someone to take an honest look at both.
